Faced with a ballooning deficit in Germany's health care system, Chancellor Angela Merkel's government decided...to raise premiums and cut into the profits of doctors, dentists, hospitals and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Germany's once highly regarded mandatory health insurance covers about 72 million people, or 90 percent of the population. It has already gone through a series of reforms to stabilize its financial base. Costs are rising swiftly because of ever more sophisticated treatments and an aging population.

New types of currency are popping up in the form of precious metal coins from private mints. 

The U.S. Treasury Department says the Coinage Act of 1965 says 'private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash.  The metal, because it's a precious metal retains its value relative to today's dollar, which has deflated."

Accepting the private mint silver or precious metal currency then "...protects you from inflation that paper money gives you."

The health care overhaul passed earlier this year will help many uninsured get coverage starting in 2014. But until then, Americans who lose employer coverage may find buying insurance on their own unaffordable. That means many of the 46 million Americans uninsured have to foot the bill for medical care.

One review concludes that "there is currently no evidence of any adverse effects associated with chiropractic pediatric care as well as other professions using manual therapy."  A second concludes that while adverse events are noted "neither causation nor incidence rates can be inferred from observational data" concerning pediatric manipulation.

The Department of Defense Defense Health Program for fiscal year 2010 includes, for the first time, a Chiropractic Clinical Trial Award "intended to support the rapid implementation of clinical trials that examine the effect of chiropractic clinical treatment either exclusively or as an adjunct to other treatments on health concerns relative to the Warfighter [member of the Armed Forces], including non-surgical orthopedic injury, pain management, smoking cessation, injury prevention, and enhancing fitness for duty."

The Texas Medical Board has charged the family physician at the center of a nationally publicized whistle-blower case involving 2 nurses, REPORTED HERE in the Texas Journal of Chiropractic, Online.

The Medical Doctor has been charged with poor medical judgment, nontherapeutic prescribing, failure to maintain adequate records, overbilling, witness intimidation, and other violations.  The two nurses have filed a federal civil suit, and the Texas Department of State Health Services has proposed a $15,000-plus fine on the involved hospital.

An unapproved supplement marketed as a "Natural Herb for Weight Loss" contains undeclared amounts of the prescription diet drug sibutramine -- which can increase risk of heart attack and stroke, an FDA analysis found.
