When the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation published its list of 45 overused tests and procedures that physicians and patients should think twice about, it did so with the caveat that these aren’t things doctors should never do — nor are they actions that should never be covered by public and private insurers.

The Choosing Wisely campaign was sparked by a 2010 article that prompted the National Physicians Alliance to publish a list of overused tests and procedures in primary care. The ABIM Foundation wanted to spread the idea to as many medical specialties as possible.  The ABIM Foundation recruited nearly a dozen consumer groups, including Consumer Reports, to help disseminate the list.

Lit tle Hallie fell and hurt her leg.  Mom and dad took her to a local minor emergency care facility. The clinic decided she must have injured her ankle and it needed to be x-rayed. Hallie was terrified of the x-ray machine and it was a bad experience. Several nurses and aides came in to hold her foot flat and steady as they proceeded. Hallie screamed in pain and fear.

They reported there was nothing damaged or broken and it must be a bad sprain. They wrapped her little ankle and sent her home. Ten days later Hallie still refused to stand on her left leg.

One of our relatives suggested a good friend who she felt could find the answer or at least confirm things once more--Dr. Nick Anthony D.C. at "Action Chiropractic Center" in Abilene, Texas...
